Reading about IT and InfoSecurity press, watching videos and following news channels can be a rather toxic activity and bad idea, as it involves discarding the important information from a wide array of all the advertising, company PR, and news article.

Given that my readers, in the absence of sufficient time, have expressed a desire to «be more informed on various IT topics», I’m proposing a project that will do both short-term and long-term analysis, reviews, and interpretations of the flow of information I come across.

Here’s what’s going to happen:
— Obtaining hard-to-come-by facts and content
— Making notes on topics and trends that are not widely reflected in public information field

OpenAI’s Spyware Overlord: The Expert with a Controversial NSA Playbook (Video)

Video ‎edition‏ ‎(check ‎out ‎different ‎players ‎if‏ ‎anything ‎doesn’t‏ ‎work)

Related‏ ‎content ‎(PDF)

Ladies ‎and‏ ‎gentlemen, ‎grab‏ ‎your ‎tinfoil ‎hats ‎and‏ ‎prepare‏ ‎for ‎a‏ ‎wild ‎ride‏ ‎through ‎the ‎labyrinth ‎of ‎cyber‏ ‎espionage‏ ‎and ‎AI‏ ‎overlords. ‎Yes,‏ ‎you ‎read ‎that ‎right. ‎OpenAI,‏ ‎in‏ ‎its‏ ‎infinite ‎wisdom,‏ ‎has ‎decided‏ ‎to ‎appoint‏ ‎none‏ ‎other ‎than‏ ‎General ‎Paul ‎M. ‎Nakasone, ‎the‏ ‎former ‎director‏ ‎of‏ ‎the ‎NSA, ‎to‏ ‎its ‎board‏ ‎of ‎directors. ‎Because ‎who‏ ‎better‏ ‎to ‎ensure‏ ‎the ‎ethical‏ ‎development ‎of ‎artificial ‎intelligence ‎than‏ ‎a‏ ‎man ‎with‏ ‎a ‎resume‏ ‎that ‎reads ‎like ‎a ‎spy‏ ‎thriller?

📌Meet‏ ‎General‏ ‎Paul ‎M.‏ ‎Nakasone: ‎General‏ ‎Nakasone ‎isn’t‏ ‎just‏ ‎any ‎retired‏ ‎military ‎officer; ‎he’s ‎the ‎longest-serving‏ ‎leader ‎of‏ ‎the‏ ‎U.S. ‎Cyber ‎Command‏ ‎and ‎former‏ ‎director ‎of ‎the ‎NSA.‏ ‎His‏ ‎resume ‎reads‏ ‎like ‎a‏ ‎who’s ‎who ‎of ‎cyber ‎warfare‏ ‎and‏ ‎digital ‎espionage.‏ ‎From ‎establishing‏ ‎the ‎NSA’s ‎Artificial ‎Intelligence ‎Security‏ ‎Center‏ ‎to‏ ‎leading ‎the‏ ‎charge ‎against‏ ‎cyber ‎threats‏ ‎from‏ ‎nation-states, ‎Nakasone’s‏ ‎expertise ‎is ‎as ‎deep ‎as‏ ‎it ‎is‏ ‎controversial.

📌The‏ ‎Safety ‎and ‎Security‏ ‎Committee: ‎In‏ ‎a ‎bid ‎to ‎fortify‏ ‎its‏ ‎defenses, ‎OpenAI‏ ‎has ‎created‏ ‎a ‎Safety ‎and ‎Security ‎Committee,‏ ‎and‏ ‎guess ‎who’s‏ ‎at ‎the‏ ‎helm? ‎That’s ‎right, ‎General ‎Nakasone.‏ ‎This‏ ‎committee‏ ‎is ‎tasked‏ ‎with ‎evaluating‏ ‎and ‎enhancing‏ ‎OpenAI’s‏ ‎security ‎measures,‏ ‎ensuring ‎that ‎their ‎AI ‎models‏ ‎are ‎as‏ ‎secure‏ ‎as ‎Fort ‎Knox.‏ ‎Or ‎at‏ ‎least, ‎that’s ‎the ‎plan.‏ ‎Given‏ ‎Nakasone’s ‎background,‏ ‎one ‎can‏ ‎only ‎wonder ‎if ‎OpenAI’s ‎definition‏ ‎of‏ ‎«security» ‎might‏ ‎lean ‎a‏ ‎bit ‎towards ‎the ‎Orwellian.

📌Industry ‎Reactions.‏ ‎Applause‏ ‎and‏ ‎Alarm ‎Bells:‏ ‎The ‎industry‏ ‎is ‎abuzz‏ ‎with‏ ‎reactions ‎to‏ ‎Nakasone’s ‎appointment. ‎Some ‎hail ‎it‏ ‎as ‎a‏ ‎masterstroke,‏ ‎bringing ‎unparalleled ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎expertise ‎to‏ ‎the ‎AI ‎frontier. ‎Others,‏ ‎however,‏ ‎are ‎less‏ ‎enthusiastic. ‎Critics‏ ‎point ‎out ‎the ‎potential ‎conflicts‏ ‎of‏ ‎interest ‎and‏ ‎the ‎murky‏ ‎waters ‎of ‎data ‎privacy ‎that‏ ‎come‏ ‎with‏ ‎a ‎former‏ ‎NSA ‎director‏ ‎overseeing ‎AI‏ ‎development.‏ ‎After ‎all,‏ ‎who ‎better ‎to ‎secure ‎your‏ ‎data ‎than‏ ‎someone‏ ‎who ‎spent ‎years‏ ‎finding ‎ways‏ ‎to ‎collect ‎it?

📌The ‎Global‏ ‎Implications: Nakasone’s‏ ‎appointment ‎isn’t‏ ‎just ‎a‏ ‎domestic ‎affair; ‎it ‎has ‎global‏ ‎ramifications.‏ ‎Countries ‎around‏ ‎the ‎world‏ ‎are ‎likely ‎to ‎scrutinize ‎OpenAI’s‏ ‎activities‏ ‎more‏ ‎closely, ‎wary‏ ‎of ‎potential‏ ‎surveillance ‎and‏ ‎data‏ ‎privacy ‎issues.‏ ‎This ‎move ‎could ‎intensify ‎the‏ ‎tech ‎cold‏ ‎war,‏ ‎with ‎nations ‎like‏ ‎China ‎and‏ ‎Russia ‎ramping ‎up ‎their‏ ‎own‏ ‎AI ‎and‏ ‎cybersecurity ‎efforts‏ ‎in ‎response.

In ‎this ‎riveting ‎this‏ ‎document,‏ ‎you’ll ‎discover‏ ‎how ‎the‏ ‎mastermind ‎behind ‎the ‎NSA’s ‎most‏ ‎controversial‏ ‎surveillance‏ ‎programs ‎is‏ ‎now ‎tasked‏ ‎with ‎guiding‏ ‎the‏ ‎future ‎of‏ ‎AI. ‎Spoiler ‎alert: ‎it’s ‎all‏ ‎about ‎«cybersecurity»‏ ‎and‏ ‎«national ‎security"—terms ‎that‏ ‎are ‎sure‏ ‎to ‎make ‎you ‎sleep‏ ‎better‏ ‎at ‎night.‏ ‎So ‎sit‏ ‎back, ‎relax, ‎and ‎enjoy ‎the‏ ‎show‏ ‎as ‎we‏ ‎delve ‎into‏ ‎the ‎fascinating ‎world ‎of ‎AI‏ ‎development‏ ‎under‏ ‎the ‎watchful‏ ‎eye ‎of‏ ‎Big ‎Brother.

Bridging Military and AI: The Potential Impact of Nakasone's Expertise on OpenAI's Development

In ‎terms‏ ‎of ‎specific ‎countries ‎and ‎companies,‏ ‎the ‎impact‏ ‎of‏ ‎the ‎appointment ‎will‏ ‎depend ‎on‏ ‎their ‎individual ‎relationships ‎with‏ ‎OpenAI‏ ‎and ‎the‏ ‎United ‎States.‏ ‎Some ‎countries, ‎such ‎as ‎China,‏ ‎may‏ ‎view ‎the‏ ‎appointment ‎as‏ ‎a ‎threat ‎to ‎their ‎national‏ ‎security‏ ‎and‏ ‎economic ‎interests,‏ ‎while ‎others,‏ ‎such ‎as‏ ‎the‏ ‎United ‎Kingdom,‏ ‎may ‎see ‎it ‎as ‎an‏ ‎opportunity ‎for‏ ‎increased‏ ‎cooperation ‎and ‎collaboration.

Companies‏ ‎worldwide ‎may‏ ‎also ‎need ‎to ‎reassess‏ ‎their‏ ‎relationships ‎with‏ ‎OpenAI ‎and‏ ‎the ‎United ‎States ‎government ‎in‏ ‎light‏ ‎of ‎the‏ ‎appointment. ‎This‏ ‎could ‎lead ‎to ‎changes ‎in‏ ‎business‏ ‎strategies,‏ ‎partnerships, ‎and‏ ‎investments ‎in‏ ‎the ‎AI‏ ‎sector.

📌 Enhanced‏ ‎Cybersecurity: ‎The‏ ‎former ‎NSA ‎director's ‎expertise ‎in‏ ‎cybersecurity ‎can‏ ‎help‏ ‎OpenAI ‎strengthen ‎its‏ ‎defenses ‎against‏ ‎cyber ‎threats, ‎which ‎is‏ ‎crucial‏ ‎in ‎today's‏ ‎interconnected ‎world.‏ ‎This ‎can ‎lead ‎to ‎increased‏ ‎trust‏ ‎in ‎OpenAI's‏ ‎products ‎and‏ ‎services ‎among ‎global ‎customers.

📌 Global ‎Surveillance‏ ‎Concerns: The‏ ‎NSA's‏ ‎history ‎of‏ ‎global ‎surveillance‏ ‎raises ‎concerns‏ ‎about‏ ‎the ‎potential‏ ‎misuse ‎of ‎OpenAI's ‎technology ‎for‏ ‎mass ‎surveillance.‏ ‎This‏ ‎could ‎lead ‎to‏ ‎increased ‎scrutiny‏ ‎from ‎governments ‎and ‎civil‏ ‎society‏ ‎organizations ‎worldwide.

📌 Impact‏ ‎on ‎Global‏ ‎Competitors: ‎The ‎appointment ‎may ‎give‏ ‎OpenAI‏ ‎a ‎competitive‏ ‎edge ‎in‏ ‎the ‎global ‎AI ‎market, ‎potentially‏ ‎threatening‏ ‎the‏ ‎interests ‎of‏ ‎other ‎AI‏ ‎companies ‎worldwide.‏ ‎This‏ ‎could ‎lead‏ ‎to ‎increased ‎competition ‎and ‎innovation‏ ‎in ‎the‏ ‎AI‏ ‎sector.

📌 Global ‎Governance: ‎The‏ ‎integration ‎of‏ ‎a ‎former ‎NSA ‎director‏ ‎into‏ ‎OpenAI's ‎board‏ ‎may ‎raise‏ ‎questions ‎about ‎the ‎governance ‎of‏ ‎AI‏ ‎development ‎and‏ ‎deployment ‎globally.‏ ‎This ‎could ‎lead ‎to ‎calls‏ ‎for‏ ‎more‏ ‎robust ‎international‏ ‎regulations ‎and‏ ‎standards ‎for‏ ‎AI‏ ‎development.

📌 National ‎Security‏ ‎Implications: The ‎appointment ‎may ‎have ‎national‏ ‎security ‎implications‏ ‎for‏ ‎countries ‎that ‎are‏ ‎not ‎aligned‏ ‎with ‎the ‎United ‎States.‏ ‎This‏ ‎could ‎lead‏ ‎to ‎increased‏ ‎tensions ‎and ‎concerns ‎about ‎the‏ ‎potential‏ ‎misuse ‎of‏ ‎AI ‎technology‏ ‎for ‎geopolitical ‎gain.

📌 Global ‎Economic ‎Impact: The‏ ‎increased‏ ‎focus‏ ‎on ‎AI‏ ‎development ‎and‏ ‎deployment ‎could‏ ‎have‏ ‎significant ‎economic‏ ‎implications ‎globally. ‎This ‎could ‎lead‏ ‎to ‎job‏ ‎displacement,‏ ‎changes ‎in ‎global‏ ‎supply ‎chains,‏ ‎and ‎shifts ‎in ‎economic‏ ‎power‏ ‎dynamics.

📌 Global ‎Cooperation:‏ ‎The ‎appointment‏ ‎may ‎also ‎lead ‎to ‎increased‏ ‎cooperation‏ ‎between ‎governments‏ ‎and ‎private‏ ‎companies ‎worldwide ‎to ‎address ‎the‏ ‎challenges‏ ‎and‏ ‎opportunities ‎posed‏ ‎by ‎AI.‏ ‎This ‎could‏ ‎lead‏ ‎to ‎the‏ ‎development ‎of ‎new ‎international ‎standards‏ ‎and ‎agreements‏ ‎on‏ ‎AI ‎development ‎and‏ ‎deployment.

In ‎a ‎significant‏ ‎move‏ ‎to ‎bolster‏ ‎its ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎capabilities, ‎OpenAI, ‎a ‎leading ‎artificial‏ ‎intelligence‏ ‎research ‎and‏ ‎development ‎company,‏ ‎has ‎appointed ‎retired ‎U.S. ‎Army‏ ‎General‏ ‎Paul‏ ‎M. ‎Nakasone‏ ‎to ‎its‏ ‎board ‎of‏ ‎directors.‏ ‎Nakasone, ‎who‏ ‎previously ‎served ‎as ‎the ‎director‏ ‎of ‎the‏ ‎National‏ ‎Security ‎Agency ‎(NSA)‏ ‎and ‎the‏ ‎commander ‎of ‎U.S. ‎Cyber‏ ‎Command,‏ ‎brings ‎extensive‏ ‎experience ‎in‏ ‎cybersecurity ‎and ‎national ‎security ‎to‏ ‎the‏ ‎table. ‎His‏ ‎appointment ‎underscores‏ ‎OpenAI's ‎commitment ‎to ‎ensuring ‎the‏ ‎safe‏ ‎and‏ ‎beneficial ‎development‏ ‎of ‎artificial‏ ‎general ‎intelligence‏ ‎(AGI).

Nakasone's‏ ‎military ‎career‏ ‎spanned ‎over ‎three ‎decades, ‎during‏ ‎which ‎he‏ ‎played‏ ‎a ‎pivotal ‎role‏ ‎in ‎shaping‏ ‎the ‎U.S. ‎military's ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎posture.‏ ‎As ‎the‏ ‎longest-serving ‎leader‏ ‎of ‎U.S. ‎Cyber ‎Command, ‎he‏ ‎oversaw‏ ‎the ‎creation‏ ‎of ‎the‏ ‎command ‎and ‎was ‎instrumental ‎in‏ ‎developing‏ ‎the‏ ‎country's ‎cyber‏ ‎defense ‎capabilities.‏ ‎His ‎tenure‏ ‎at‏ ‎the ‎NSA‏ ‎saw ‎the ‎establishment ‎of ‎the‏ ‎Artificial ‎Intelligence‏ ‎Security‏ ‎Center, ‎which ‎focuses‏ ‎on ‎safeguarding‏ ‎the ‎nation's ‎digital ‎infrastructure‏ ‎and‏ ‎advancing ‎its‏ ‎cyberdefense ‎capabilities.

At‏ ‎OpenAI, ‎Nakasone ‎will ‎initially ‎join‏ ‎the‏ ‎Safety ‎and‏ ‎Security ‎Committee,‏ ‎which ‎is ‎responsible ‎for ‎making‏ ‎critical‏ ‎safety‏ ‎and ‎security‏ ‎decisions ‎for‏ ‎all ‎OpenAI‏ ‎projects‏ ‎and ‎operations.‏ ‎His ‎insights ‎will ‎significantly ‎contribute‏ ‎to ‎the‏ ‎company's‏ ‎efforts ‎to ‎better‏ ‎understand ‎how‏ ‎AI ‎can ‎be ‎used‏ ‎to‏ ‎strengthen ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎by ‎quickly‏ ‎detecting ‎and ‎responding ‎to ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎threats.‏ ‎Nakasone's ‎expertise‏ ‎will ‎be‏ ‎invaluable ‎in ‎guiding ‎OpenAI ‎in‏ ‎achieving‏ ‎its‏ ‎mission ‎of‏ ‎ensuring ‎that‏ ‎AGI ‎benefits‏ ‎all‏ ‎of ‎humanity.

The‏ ‎appointment ‎has ‎been ‎met ‎with‏ ‎positive ‎reactions‏ ‎from‏ ‎industry ‎experts. ‎Many‏ ‎believe ‎that‏ ‎Nakasone's ‎military ‎and ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎background‏ ‎will ‎provide‏ ‎invaluable ‎insights,‏ ‎particularly ‎as ‎AI ‎technologies ‎become‏ ‎increasingly‏ ‎integral ‎to‏ ‎national ‎security‏ ‎and ‎defense ‎strategies. ‎His ‎experience‏ ‎in‏ ‎cybersecurity‏ ‎will ‎help‏ ‎OpenAI ‎navigate‏ ‎the ‎complex‏ ‎landscape‏ ‎of ‎AI‏ ‎safety ‎and ‎ensure ‎that ‎its‏ ‎AI ‎systems‏ ‎are‏ ‎robust ‎against ‎various‏ ‎forms ‎of‏ ‎cyber ‎threats.

While ‎Nakasone's ‎appointment‏ ‎is‏ ‎a ‎significant‏ ‎step ‎forward,‏ ‎OpenAI ‎still ‎faces ‎challenges ‎in‏ ‎ensuring‏ ‎the ‎safe‏ ‎and ‎responsible‏ ‎development ‎of ‎AI. ‎The ‎company‏ ‎has‏ ‎recently‏ ‎seen ‎departures‏ ‎of ‎key‏ ‎safety ‎personnel,‏ ‎including‏ ‎co-founder ‎and‏ ‎chief ‎scientist ‎Ilya ‎Sutskever ‎and‏ ‎Jan ‎Leike,‏ ‎who‏ ‎were ‎outspokenly ‎concerned‏ ‎about ‎the‏ ‎company's ‎prioritization ‎of ‎safety‏ ‎processes.‏ ‎Nakasone's ‎role‏ ‎will ‎be‏ ‎crucial ‎in ‎addressing ‎these ‎concerns‏ ‎and‏ ‎ensuring ‎that‏ ‎OpenAI's ‎AI‏ ‎systems ‎are ‎developed ‎with ‎safety‏ ‎and‏ ‎security‏ ‎at ‎their‏ ‎core.
