Yangzhou Liu -- When Go Meets Mathematics: A Graph Theoretic and Geometric Exploration of Opening Principles

This talk presents a mathematical framework for analyzing the board game Go. We model the Go board as a graph, allowing us to formally define core concepts like "liberties" and "territory" using graph theory. We introduce the "stone-breath ratio" to quantify the efficiency of different stone formations. By applying Pick's theorem, we establish a mathematical relationship between territory, shape, and liberties. Furthermore, we introduce the taxicab metric and the concept of "n-boundaries" to provide a unified description for standard moves (e.g., jump, knight's move). Finally, we define a "potential function" based on connection probability. Through combinatorial calculations, we quantify this potential for various opening moves, offering a mathematical rationale behind strategic choices in the opening phase. This work aims to build a bridge between intuitive Go play and rigorous mathematical analysis.
